Latvians, also called 'The Singing Nation' like their Baltic neighbours, are famous interpreters of the Daïnas. These popular songs, which are short and poetic, are often compared to the Japanese haïkus. Over one million folkloric songs have been written in Latvia. This musical heritage is enough to call for summer gatherings, including the National Song Festival organised in Riga, and the Baltica International Festival organised under the auspices of UNESCO. The latter is organised every five years in one of the Baltic Republics.
