Smoked fish is very popular in Latvia, and do not raise your eyebrows if you see cheese served as hors-oeuvre. Cabbage soup and sausages are traditional dishes here and among the Latvian specialties there is piragi, a little onion and bacon turnover and alexander torte, a raspberry or cranberry-filled pastry. As for beverages, there is a good number of stout and light ale beers which are made locally and which have become very well known. The local drink is Riga black liquor.
