At Baalbek, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans worshipped the Sun God, Baal, Helios and Jupiter. This site is truly spectacular. Emperor Augustus set the task of building the biggest acropolis in the Roman Empire and what is left of this ambitious project are mighty vestiges which figure among the most interesting ruins from the Roman Empire. The temple of Jupiter and the temple of Bacchus are particularly well-preserved and are the best ones to see.
