Beirut

Beirut has a population of 1 and a half million. It is a town with skyscrapers and thousands of suburbs where Palestinian camps are still lodged. The Lebanese capital, which for many years had been associated with war, kidnappings and terror, seems very welcoming at first sight and this impression is confirmed when you visit the town centre. Before the war the city was full of souks and lively streets, today it is a vast construction site. Although promoters have decided to reconstruct the heart of the capital, around Martyrs Square, there remain a few elegant houses of the Ottoman era. Take a walk around this lively but polluted city, have a drink and watch joggers and families passing by. Before leaving Beirut, visit the National Museum and stroll around Achrafieh, a district which is full of beautiful ancient houses.
