Maseru, Lesotho's capital is close to the country's western border. It is a small city with 200,000 inhabitants and it is rather old-fashioned looking; its first street was cobblestoned in 1947 in advance of a visit by the British Royal family. Do not leave without visiting the Papal Pavilion commemorating the Pope's visit to Lesotho or the villages bordering the capital (like Phomolong), where you will have first hand contact with the traditional Basotho culture and way of life.
