Monrovia

Monrovia, Liberia's capital, suffered greatly during the civil war. Most of the infrastructure and several buildings were destroyed. Visitors can still go to the market by the sea where craftsmen sell their products. Providence Island is of great historical interest: this is where the first Black Americans landed after being freed from slavery. A few beaches are accessible around the city. Six miles north is Ellens beach, which is very populated on the weekends. Kendeja beach, 9 miles east, also receives large crowds. It is possible to visit the nearby Firestone rubber plantations in Harbel. They are 40 miles from Monrovia, near Robertsfield airport. Beware! Do not take the beaten tracks, as the Firestone region is full of minefields left by the recent war.
