Around 2,000 BC: Settlement of Proto-Baltic (Lithuanian ancestors) of indo-european origins. They live on farming and the sale of amber.
From the 12th century: The population is christianised by germanic orders allied to the Dutch.
1252: The Grand Duchy of Lithuania is founded by the indigenous chief Mindaugas.
14th century: the Grand Duchy extends from the Baltic to the Black Sea and Vilnius becomes the capital.
1410: Lithuanians and their Polish allies defeated Teuton armies in the battle of Tannenberg.
1569! The Lublin Union founded a Lithuanian-Polish state that lasted until 1795. Lithuania and the other Baltic states were attached to Russia.
1919 to 1939: Lithuania is recognised as an independent state. It then becomes a member of the Soviet Union.
1990: The singing revolution takes place. Lithuania's independence is proclaimed.
1992: The Baltic Council is founded and includes Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden.
May 2003: Lithuanians vote for the integration of their country into the European Union.
1st May 2004: Lithuania becomes part of the 25.
