Around 20 mi from Vilnius, the ruins of Lithuania's oldest town can be seen. The site of Kernave, which is today lined with burial mounds covered in grass, was once a fortified town and therefore the country's first capital. That is, until it was looted and destroyed in the 14th century by the Teutonic Knights. Excavations today have established that the site of Kernave was inhabited as early as the Prehistoric times, and it has been listed as one of Unesco's World Heritage Sites for its unique character.
