  • Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania

Despite its small size, Vilnius is as charming as all central European capitals and this can be seen from the tower of (the Medieval) Gediminas Castle. Visit the Renaissance-style University, one of the oldest in Europe (16th century). The town is full of churches: the Gothic Church of Saint-Paul-and Saint-Peter, Saint-Anne's Church, Piatniskaia Orthodox Church and the cathedral. There are also several museums including the National Museum and the Applied Arts Museum. The Vilnius Ghetto and the Jewish History Museum relate the story of the Jews in Vilnius and the Genocide Victims Museum is lodged in the former KGB and Gestapo HQ. The guides are former detainees who show you the cells in which they were tortured.
