1557, the Portuguese who intended to trade with China founded the Macau counter.
17th century, the Dutch tried on four occasions to seize Macau but they were forced back by the Portuguese troops.
1670, China officially recognised the Portuguese possession.
1841, British founded Hong Kong whose commercial development gradually knocked out Macau.
1849, the ortuguese made Macau a duty-free port and finally settled in the territory. This annexation was recognised in 1887 by China in a trade and friendship treaty with Lisbon.
1966-1967, the Chinese cultural revolution hit Macau and led to a major political crisis. Portugal proposed to restore Macau, which China rejected.
1974 , after the revolution in Portugal, Peking rejected again the Portuguese proposal to retrocede the territory but the two countries agreed in 1979 to make Macau a Chinese territory administered by Portugal, and in 1987, they agreed to retrocede it on 20 December 1999 in a model similar to that of Hong Kong
