Ohrid, the oldest lake in the world Lying between Albania and Macedonia, Ohrid Lake is considered to be one of the oldest water basins in the world. Its water is particularly clear and its wildlife very diverse. Christian Sappa / Hoa Qui
Far south of Macedonia, Lake Ohrid, that borders the town, is one of the biggest natural reserves in Europe thanks to the peculiarity of its fauna and flora. It is truly a "freshwater sea" stretching over 138 square miles with a depth close to 900 feet. It is also one of the most limpid lakes in the world: its transparency can go down to 69 feet and the site attracts crowds of tourists. The village of Velestovo on the slopes of Mount Petrino offers a magnificient view of the lake. Swim in Gorica and Saint-Stephen beaches and stop at Gradist peninsula, one of the most beautiful sites in Ohrid (provided with a modern campsite).
