Ohrid, under the protection of Unesco, is the "pearl of pearls of the Balkans". Built on the lake of the same name, one of Europe's biggest natural reserve, the city-museum is a mixture of natural and spiritual splendours. Buried in luxuriant vegetation, at the foot of purple mountains, this cradle of Slavic Christianity is topped by the ruins of the ramparts of the Bulgarian Csar Samuel's fortress, whose main door, flanked by towers, is still visible. Saint-Sophia's cathedral (11th century) is outstanding for its medieval frescoes and their groups of angels. Saint-Clement's church (13th century) overlooks the city and its surroundings and has a rich collection of icons dating from the 11th to the 18th century. These works are among the greatest achievements in pictorial Byzantine and Slavish creations. You also have a superb view of the lake from the Saint-John-of-Canea's church (14th century). The setting is wonderful, perched above the sea. Visit the Old City on foot. Generally, ancient 18th and 19th century houses are high with corbelled balconies. White fronts have large lined windows emphasized with wood. In the old market square, you can randomly enjoy the different richly stocked traders' stalls, characteristic of the city. Do not hesitate to stroll along the terrace of coffee shops in Saint-Clement's square, on the fishing harbour and white-pepple beaches where in summer you can swim in crystal-clear water.
