Population

Airports
Skopje's airport is 14 miles away from the city centre. There are no buses. By taxi it costs about 570 MKD.

Security
The internal situation is not too risky. The situation is good in most large towns. Avoid border regions. NATO's bombings of Serbia and Kosovo and Serbian military attacks in answer to them can extend to some villages inside Macedonia. Beware of tensions with the neighbouring Greeks, Bulgarians and Albanians for various sociocultural or geopolitical reasons.

Languages
The official language is Macedonian (70%). Albanian (21%), Turkish (3%), Serbo-Croatian (3%), Rom and Vlach are spoken by the minorities. German is the most spoken foreign language.

Requirements
A valid passport is required. A visa is not mandatory for a stay of less than three months.

Religion
Most Slavs are Orthodox (67%). Albanians and Turks are Muslims (30%).

Currency
The currency is the Macedonian Denar (MKD). £1 Sterling = 68.5 MKD. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are only accepted in larger stores but travellers cheques can be cashed in the banks in the capital. You will only find ATM machines in Skopje, and these are few and far between. Banks are open from 7:00am to 6:00pm during the week.

Local transportation
Roads are generally good. Driving in town and on motorways should be done with care: traffic law is not always observed. The international insurance card (green card) bearing "F.Y.R.O.M." is required before you are allowed into the country. A European national driving licence is required. International car rental companies are available (Hertz, Avis) there. An internal airline connects Skopje to Ohrid. The railway line is good, but very slow. Macedonia's major cities are served (except Ohrid). It is advisable to travel by bus, its line being well developed. There are frequent shuttles from Skopje to Ohrid (reserve in advance) and Bitola.

Health
No vaccination required, but check that your DTP vaccine (Diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis) is up to date. Vaccine against hepatitis B is recommended. Vaccination against yellow fever is justified if you have previously travelled in an infected zone.
The sanitary conditions in the country's hospitals are poor: in case of a serious disease involving a hospitalisation, it is recommended to return to the UK. It is recommended to subscribe to a medical repatriation insurance.

Electricity
Voltage of 220 V. 50 Hertz. Adapter not needed.
