Antananarivo

Antananarivo Antananarivo A former stronghold, Antananarivo is built across twelve different hills, which is what gives it its very unique landscape. A.Lorgnier ©

The capital of Madagascar looks like no other city in the world. It is made of bricks and extends over a set of hills overlooking the rice fields (average altitude of 4,265 ft). At the bend of the streets and on the heights of the numerous stairs, you will discover exquisite ancient homes, churches and temples made of bricks. A walk through the Andohalo neighbourhood leads to Rova, a block of royal palaces undergoing renovation following a fire in 1995. You can continue your trip to the Tsimbazaza zoological park, for an initiation into the plant and animal life of the island. Also worth discovering are the ethnological and paleontological museums. In the surroundings of the city, a trip to the hills of Imerina is an excellent introduction to the island, and from there you can wander into the charming redbrick villages to uncover the soul of the people.
