Nosy Be and its surrounding areas, Madagascar

Nosy Be is a very touristic island northwest of Madagascar. Hell-Ville is the capital of the island, where the only administrative services are located.

Ambatoloaka ( "Ambatoulouk") is the seaside village of the island, located about 6 miles from Hell-Ville.

Life on the island is very expensive, much more expensive than on the rest of the Malagasy territory.

It is interesting to visit its museums, plantations and the town centre, but you would get bored quickly at Nosy Be, so do not hesitate to discover its surrounding islands, like Nosy Komba, Nosy Tsarabanjina, Nosy Iranja, Nosy sakatia and Nosy Tanikely.

Nosy Tsrabanjina:
Located some 40 miles from the port of Nosy Be, Tsarabanjina is a paradise of the Mitsio archipelago. With an area of 54 acres, this small island is just like an exotic garden surrounded by crystal clear waters and will seduce you with its dreamy environment and tropical charm. Nosy Tsarabanjina is a mountainous island, with extraordinary birds and lush vegetation, lined with white sand beaches and surrounded by a coral reef.

Tsarabanjina is an island to discover to the rhythm of nature. You can walk, climb the hills and get lost in the tangle of its lush vegetation. On the peninsula of the East Sea beach, you can find the tombs of sakalava kings of the Mitsio islands. Even today, residents of Mitsio believe this site to be sacred and frequently make offerings such as money, honey or rum. Facing Tsarabanjina, on the north-west side, there are the mythical rocks where there are a multitude of birds nest. They are famous for their scuba diving; around Nosy Tsarabanjina, the reef is the world's oldest and the richest on the planet. You can therefore go diving here, but also practice water skiing, wake boarding, and take catamaran trips to the islands Les Quatre Frères (four brothers).

Nosy Komba:
Just opposite Hell-Ville, this island is the most visited island around Nosy Be. Here you can stroll and enjoy the tranquility offered by the area. You can walk on foot, including a tour with a very nice lady who will take you to see the lemurs, day and night, or by boat.

Nosy Iranja:
Two paradise islands connected by a white sandbar. One islet is home to the hotel Iranja Lodge, the other hosts a village. It takes about an hour and a half to two hours to get here by boat from the port of Hell-Ville.

Nosy Sakatia:
The former fishing island, Nosy Sakatia offers beautiful walks and the discovery of some villages.

Visit Nosy Be and its surrounding areas

  • To see

You should not miss a walk in the small village of Ambatoulouk next to Nosy Be. In addition to the beauty of the landscape, the islands of Nosy Komba and Nosy Iranja most interesting visit on offer is to the local villages.

    To do

In Nosy Komba, you can visit the lemurs reserve, left in freedom, who will be pleased to sit on your shoulders, and wait for a piece of banana. The reserve is also home to turtles and various birds.

    To think about

Do not forget to bring some anti-mosquito lotion and to put some on in the morning as well as in the evening, even if you are wearing long-sleeved clothing as the mosquitoes bite can bite through it.
  • To avoid

Avoid wearing shorts and T-shirts in the evening if you are walking on the islands, opt for clothing with long sleeves. The cyclone period (late December-early April) is to be avoided.

    To try

We advise you to spend a lunchtime eating at the Jardin Vanille hotel in Nosy Komba (see the hotel index). You can eat very well there, the cuisine is refined and the welcome is very warm. It is very pleasant to go and take a short excursion on the island and to lunch amid its enchanting setting where the lemurs are left in freedom.

    To bring back

In Nosy Komba, you can find massage lotions with a base of essential oils extracted from the region. The Tsarabanjina hotel shop, even though its prices are quite high compared to those of local markets, sells refined products.
