The cities of Diégo-Suarez and Fort-Dauphin lie on magnificent bays. The first one, also known as Antsiranana, lies on the northern tip of the island. It is located on a bay of such exquisite beauty that it is often compared to Rio de Janeiro. It was on this same bay that the Allies landed in 1942 to rally Madagascar to help free France. Its natural port is easily one of the most outstanding in the Indian Ocean. On the south-eastern tip of the island lies Fort Dauphin, better known to the Madagascans as Taolagnaro. It is isolated from the rest of the island but remains a very popular tourist destination. Taolagnaro also boasts a unique and very pleasant climate that largely accounts for its popularity. However, to reach this bit of paradise, you will need to be patient, for the road is long.
