The fourth largest island on the globe, Madagascar has no mountains, but most of the centre of the island is occupied by tablelands covering its full length from north to south. Three main massifs vary between 2,460 and 4,430 ft: the Tsaratanana in the north-west, the Ankaratra in the south of the capital, Antananarivo, and the Andringitra in the Fianarantsoa region in the south-east of the country.
