The west coast Although certain areas are in the very advanced stages of desertification, the west coast still boasts some relatively unknown beaches A.Lorgnier ©
In the west, Morondava and Belo-sur-mer are renowned for their endless beaches. However, the coast has been repeatedly assaulted by the sea that has caused deep and rapid erosion of the coast and countless villages have suffered from this relentless natural phenomenon. The capital of the west coast, Mahajanga (Majunga), the second port of the island, is not highly visited due to its remoteness. However, it boasts splendid wild beaches although the sea is often red due to the laterite carried by the Betsiboka River.
