1964 : Nyassaland is independent and becomes
Malawi
1966 : Proclamation of the Republic with a single party and
personal reign of Kamuzu Banda, who becomes president for life in 1971
June 1993 : Malawians
vote for democracy and a multi-party system.
July 1994 : Bakili Muluzi, leader of the United Democratic Front, wins
the presidential elections defeating Banda
June 15th 1999 : Bakili Muluzi
is reelected for a second term as well as his party, the United Democratic Front
(UDF) in parliament.
May 2004: Bingu wa Mutharika wins presidential
elections.
