Lilongwe is the Malawian capital and the centre of a fertile rtobacco and peanut-producing region. The town-centre has many modern administrative buildings. In the Old City, you can visit the main market where yo can find bric-a-brac, fruit and vegetables, chicken and fish. 4 miles north of the town are the tobacco auction halls. Tobacco is a thriving industry - about 15 000 bales of tobacco are sold every day. You will notice a somewhat controversial sign: "Thank you for smoking" !
