Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi is part of the principal Malaysian seaside resorts. Despite the hotel boom in the 1980s, the island has succeeded in retaining its beautiful landscapes, including vast rice paddies, a beautiful virgin forest and pleasant beaches. Like most of the country, it has cultural diversity - a mixture of Malay, Indian and Chinese. The island's emblem is the eagle, found there in large numbers, particularly in the mangrove swamps. The roads are lined with small monkeys "begging" for food! The island has a population of some 28,000 people, but most reside outside the capital, Kuah. It is not very big and does not present much interest. Hence, you visit Langkawi to enjoy its beaches, maintained much better than those in Penang, and also for its beautiful forest paths and the mangrove swamp.
As for shopping, be aware that the island of Langkawi is a tax free zone. Alcohol and cigarettes, for example, are sold cheaper than at the international airport in Kuala Lumpur.
Several airlines companies connect the UK to Malaysia , like Malaysia Airlines. It has become one of the most important companies in Asia today. It offers a daily service between London and Kuala Lumpur. The trip takes about 12 hours, nonstop. Some 48,000 passengers choose this company's service every day. Once in Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi is just an hour' flight away using a domestic service, linking the capital to the island. Four flights are offered every day.

Visit Langkawi

  • To see

The view from the top of the island. It can be reached by the Langkawi Cable Car. A cable car takes you to an altitude of just over 700 m, to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang. The view is breathtaking. If the sky is clear enough, there is a beautiful view of the Andaman Sea and especially Thailand.

    To do

A walk through the mangrove swamp. There are beautiful caves where bats sleep peacefully. Many monkeys live idly along the shore. The fishing eagles have chosen to live in the forest. Some fishermen's farms are located on the river where curious spitting fishes make a show.

    To think about

Do not forget your sun protection cream as the Malay sun can wreak havoc ! If you forget, you can always find some and buy it on the spot. As for malaria, the urban and the coastal areas are not considered to be high-risk areas. However, the rest of the country is classified in risk zone 3.
  • To avoid

During your cultural visits, do not forget to dress decently in order to enter the religious monuments, out of respect for practitioners. Remember that women are usually not allowed to enter mosques without heads and hair being covered.

    To try

Langkawi does not have a specific dish representing the island. You can still enjoy the Malaysian cuisine, mixed with Thai, Chinese, Indian and Indonesian cuisines. The national dish is satay, skewered grilled meats, cooked and marinated in a spicy mixture, based on peanuts. More generally, there is rice (nasi goreng) or noodles (mee goreng), cooked with meat (chicken, beef, lamb) or fish, all with coconut milk and spiced with saffron, ginger, cinnamon, coriander, garlic or lemongrass.

    To bring back

There are various objects in Langkawi brought from neighbouring countries, such as Thailand or Indonesia. The night markets are full of various gadgets, music CDs, DVDs, clothes ... For things such as digital cameras or cell phones, be aware that prices are roughly the same as in the UK.

From Kedah to Johor via Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia is composed of 13 states and three federal territories. So much of the landscape is worth the 13 or so hours flying time from the UK.
