Gozo and Comino, Malta

What a good idea to come and stay in Gozo and Comino. It is here that you will taste the Maltese 'Dolce Vita', on the very spot where the nymph Calypso is said to have enchanted Odysseus for seven years.

It is far from the noisy bustle of the major seaside resorts of Malta. The island of Gozo has a beautiful landscape of cliffs, hills, beaches and crops of fruit and vegetables. Even the capital Victoria has the appearance of a small provincial town.

Gozo and Comino can combine a resort stay, culture and natural attractions; this is our favourite destination in Malta.

Despite their small size (8 and a half miles by 5 miles for Gozo and 1 mile for Comino), the two islands have a wealth of pleasant attractions for tourists. On Gozo, start with a visit to the capital Victoria. Stroll down the narrow streets that surround the square, the vibrant centre of the city, before going to the citadel.

From Mgarr, in Malta, take a boat to spend a day in Comino, a small rocky island inhabited by only 8 people in addition to clients of the unique hotel.

pros

  •  An air of authenticitythat is much more distinguished than in Malta.
  •  The coastline is well preserved.
  •  The beauty of the Blue Lagoon.

cons

  •  The influx of tourists during high season.
  •  The lack of places to go out at night .
  •  Unless you rent a car, it is sometimes difficult to move from one point to another.

Visit Gozo and Comino

  • To see

On Gozo, around Victoria, go to the temples of Ggantija, a site older than the pyramids of Egypt, which constitutes the best preserved megalithic site on the island. On the seafront, the site of Dwejra Bay is home to three natural wonders: the Inland Sea, a sort of lagoon closed by the cliffs, the Azur Window, a gigantic arch carved by the waves on the rocky coast and Fungus Rock, an impressive rock jetting out from the sea.

    To do

Diving is the main activity for holidaymakers on the island of Gozo. All or almost all of the hotels have a very well equipped diving centre, offering introductory courses and certificates earned on several outings in a series or just one by one. Also do not hesitate to rent a bicycle to get around the island (the island is not very hilly and distances are short).

    To think about

To have the Blue Lagoon to yourself, you must stay on the island of Comino, in the only hotel that exists or the camp site next door, and come in the morning. You can wade in the turquoise water, until around 10:00 am when the Blue Lagoon turns into a marina.
  • To avoid

Avoid taking the ferry between Malta and Gozo at the weekend as this is what the entire population of the archipelago does during the weekend. The boats leave at an interval of 30 to 45 minutes, so the queue of vehicles that are waiting stretches for a couple of miles; you will wait up to two hours. Passengers without vehicles often get on the boat without much delay, if any, because there are far fewer.

    To try

Try some local rustic dishes in an appropriate setting (former Gozitan farm). The best address on the island is the Ta Frenc (Ghajn Damma Street, Xaghra). Try, for example, the civet of rabbit with white wine or aljotta (fish soup). For less adventurous stomachs, some excellent pasta dishes are also on the menu with ravioli and tortellini filled with meat or fish. For dessert, try a perfect Maltese nougat or fruit flambé in liquor.

    To bring back

Maltese wine (red or white). There are three main wineries that produce wines that are very light to drink; the grape is of Italian origin. As for crafts, there is handmade lace (which adorns handkerchiefs, doilies or blouses), decorative objects made of glass and works of art. Ask for more information in the hotels where exhibition sales are offered very often. Also, go and see the workshop of sculptor Joe Xuereb in Ghajnsielem.
