Mdina A fortified city, it gives off a gentle medieval and baroque atmosphere. © Wilfried Louvet
To the west of Valletta, Mdina, the 'city of silence', is the former capital of Malta. It is a superb city with medieval façades and Norman palaces. Perched on a 492ft high plateau, it overlooks a vast panorama stretching out to the sea. There are three entrances to get through its fortified walls, choose the Big Gate to enter the heart of the old city. Take Villegaignon Street with its beautiful houses and make sure to climb the ramparts with their splendid view.
