Located on the island of Gozo, this is the locals' favourite place of pilgrimage. The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here in the 19th Century amidst a flurry of miracles, or so the story goes. The decision was made to commemorate this holy place with the construction of a basilica, for which works started in 1920. It was inaugurated by Pope Pie XI in 1932.
