The archipelago is home to impressive prehistoric sites. At the end of the Neolithic era, some 5,000 years ago, a people erected megalithic and mysterious structures: the temples of Gjantija, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Coming from Sicily in all probability, this distant civilisation has left behind amazing relics, made up of paving stones placed upon one another, they included several sections and sometimes several floors, as shown by the Hal Salflieni hypogeum, a temple with round rooms stacked up on three floors.
