Although the vegetation of Martinique is particularly lush, the wildlife is unexpectedly poor. There are nonetheless numerous bird species such as the famous humming bird, the mountain whistler, the pipiri and the sisi, the local sparrow. More common, the iguanas give an exotic touch to the landscape, as well as lizards called anolis and the mongoose, originally imported to hunt snakes, have proliferated to the point of becoming a threat to farmyard animals. From the marsupial family, the opossums prowl around the hills to find fresh fruit and can be, for some, a delicate meal requiring careful preparation.
