1502: Christopher Columbus reaches Carbet Island.
17th century: French colonization.
1760-1763: English occupation.
1848 (22nd May): abolition of slavery.
1814: the island definitively becomes French with the Treaty of Paris.
1902: Mount Pelée's eruption wipes out the town of Saint-Pierre.
1946: the island becomes a French administrative departement.
Michel Cadot has been Prefect of Martinique since June 2000.
7th December 2003: by a narrow margin of 'no's' (50,48%), Martinique (as well as Guadeloupe) rejected the institutional reform bill proposing to replace their local administrations by one single assembly.
