Mongooses

Although there are many of them on the island, they are not originally from Martinique. The mongoose was brought in colonial times by planters in order to hunt the venomous snakes also known as "lance heads". However, the mongooses were more interested in the eggs of the many birds of the island than in the snakes, which is the reason for the disappearance of much of the winged wildlife of the island.
