The east coast of Martinique, Martinique

The north-east of the island and its main city, Trinidad (sub-prefecture Martinique), is indeed a smaller seaside resort in the region Tartane, north of the Caravelle peninsula. The coastline is certainly not as beautiful as in the south but there are some nice beaches on the north coast of the peninsula and to the north of Sainte-Marie.
On the Caravelle peninsula, the hotel has grown significantly in recent years and can combine the discovery of fishing villages or walking in the area of the Mount Pelée in one holiday. Another attraction, further south, the fishing village of the François, which gives you privileged access to white sea beds (sandbanks a little deeper, accessible by boat, and on which it is customary to drink punch, with your feet in the water).

pros

  •   Near to the mountainous north.
  •   A more authentic setting than in the south, with a hotel infrastructure that is more "discreet", far from the tourist influx.
  •   Beautiful fishing villages .

cons

  •   Travelling is sometimes difficult.
  •   The necessity of having a car.
  •   If you like to party, forget this area.

Visit The east coast of Martinique

  • To see

The wild coast of Sainte-Marie is beautiful. As are the islands of the François and the Robert Islands, or the Caravelle peninsula near Trinidad, which marks a peak in the Atlantic ocean. Tartane, a small fishing village, has not been altered and has all its wild beauty preserved. You can start the walk by the ruins of the castle Dubuc in the morning, before going hiking through the nature reserve of the Caravelle. Then you can relax on the beach at Anse-l'Etang. A track runs along the peninsula to the Sea, revealing a magnificent view ....

    To do

In Sainte-Marie, you will find the museum and the St. James distillery and the museum of the Banana. The small train of plantations alternates very soon one after another. The St. James distillery produces the largest quantity of rum in Martinique. This is the only distillery still to produce a few thousand liters of central heating from the distillery by Charentais. Open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Telephone : 05 96 69 50 39. Clement house at François is a rum distillery, installed a beautiful colonial house surrounded by a pleasant park. Classified as a historic monument since 1995, the Clement house shows places dripping with history, preserved and renovated with great care, Rhums Clement, a company still in full operation. Thirty-nine acres offer an attractive area ! Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (except during the month of September). Adults : £5.50 children : £3.00. Advice : 05 96 54 62 07 and www.rhum-clement.com.

    To think about

If you are not near the east coast, think of leaving early in the morning to have time to stroll in Tartane and to take a boat excursion to the Robert islands or the François.
  • To avoid

The hurricane season (September-October) should be avoided .

    To try

Rum, rum, rum. .. No, seriously, you can obviously try rum, but there's also always accras, sausages, stuffed crabs, cray fish and lobster, chicken curry, coconut milk, flambée bananas...

    To bring back

Rum, rum, rum. .. Amber, old, white, brown, straw ... You will find all styles to make all sorts of cocktails (planter punch, caïpirinha ...) With moderation, of course! :-)
