Originally, the gommier was a boat used by the fishermen of Martinique. This canoe type of boat was carved out of the trunk of a gum tree and used for trips out at sea. With modern times, it has evolved to involve new materials and the fitting of an engine. Its form and loud colours alone have remained unchanged though. Nowadays, traditional gommiers are used for competitions organized all over the island.
