Out of the traditional handicraft, treat yourself to gold, silver or ebony jewellery. Take the time to admire the decorative leather ware, the woolen carpets and the carved wood. Even more original are the traditional music instruments used by the griots. Clothes-wise, start making up a new wardrobe full of ?boubous', the traditional male dress, as well as baggy sarouel trousers which are very comfortable when it is hot. You will also need to learn how to tie your tagelmust properly (this long piece of cloth is used as a turban and turns out to be very useful in the desert). Note that all tastes and budgets are catered for here. As far as prehistoric objects are concerned, refrain from taking any home. Leave this national heritage where it belongs and do not take part in any illicit trading. Shops are open from Sunday to Thursday from 7:30am to nightfall.
