Between Nema and Oualata, you can visit the archaeological sites of the historic caravan city of Aoudaghost (8th century to the 14th century), founded by the nomads. On this site, you will view remains from the Medieval times, the oldest mosque of the country (restored), and a large metropolis in the north of the town. Close by, do not miss the many rock paintings which are nestled in the cliffside (note the horse-drawn carts, the giraffes and the Arabic scriptures in particular).
