The base for Mauritian cuisine is curry in most dishes, meat, fish or vegetables. Puleses are also very popular. Vindaye - a ginger, saffron, garlic, mustard and chilli sauce - is prepared with fish, squid and octopus. Chinese and Indo-Muslim cuisines are also very popular. Peddlers sell 'gāteau piment' and other friend foods (all to be tried!) as well as a potato and sugar fritter, samosas, green mango, pineapple, or delicious dalpouris (thin pancakes with a butterbean and tomoto sauce for 12 rupees) out of their small carts.
