Situated on the sea side, on two mountain foothills - Pieter-Both (2,699 ft) and Mount Pouce (2,663 ft) - Port Louis is a buzzing capital city with many daytime activities available, but absolutely dead at night. In 30 years time, the city centre has changed radically. The charming colonial town has turned into a city of office tower blocks, looking like a small Hong Kong. The novelty is Caudan Waterfront, a tourism-cum-shopping centre built on the harbour, which gives the area the look of an entertainment park.
You can see Port Louis in half a day. It is recommended to arrive after the morning traffic jams. You should make a special effort to see the Chinese district, Compagnie gardens, Place d'Armes (parade ground) in order to see the old Port Louis as seen on postcards. Not far from the market, the Jummah mosque and its superb green and white façade, can be visited everyday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, except on Thursdays and Fridays. For a general view, do not hesitate to go up to Fort Adelaide which overlooks the city. It is open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
