Model ships, Mauritius Since the 1970s, model ships have been a thriving business in Mauritius. There are a number of workshops and shops selling ships, especially in Floréal and in Grand Baie. © Patrice Hauser
The ship models are some of the most beautiful handicraft objects to take back home. Replicas of historic sail ships, they are the product of delicate and meticulous work. Before opting for one of those works of art, do not hesitate to visit one of the workshops. The most important one, Historic Marine, is located in Goodlands, in the north. The workshop includes every stage of the making, from the assembling of the hull to the fitting of the ropes, without forgetting the cutting of the sails and the wood varnish. As for the prices, you will find models for all ranges of prices, but you must allow about £250 pounds for a fair piece; Historic Marine has a retail shop with honest prices.
