The south coast of Mauritius, Mauritius

This is the most famous coast of Mauritius for its wild and authentic ambiance and for its hotel properties, small but well diversified.

Those who wish to discover the area's most spectacular landscape will choose a hotel at the foot of Morne, in the south-west. This is where you find the south's most beautiful beaches. Beware, however, that hotels are quite remote.

For a good compromise between loneliness and animation, it is better to stay in the south-east part, in Mahébourg. Be careful : the airport is very close (hence time transfers are minimal), but some badly exposed hotels suffer from the noise made by air rotations.

The most beautiful portion of the south coast lies in Souillac, 9 miles south of Mahébourg. In this area, the coral disappears in favor of a very cut up basaltic coast; battered by the waves of the Indian Ocean. A surprising spectacle which peaks at the site of Souffleur: in the cliff, the sea has dug caves that branch to the summit. At high tide, rushing waves create a kind of geyser formed by the foam. Unique sensations guaranteed!

pros

  •  A still intact coast, from Souillac to Morne.
  •  Few hotels, but of varied quality.

cons

  •  The wind, common, blows along the coast
  •  No big city nearby.

Visit The south coast of Mauritius

  • To see

The Domaine du Chasseur. 500 m above sea level, this preserved area offers a panoramic view of the hills of Grand Old Port, the lagoon and the pass to the ocean. The programme includes, hiking or quad, river fishing and hunting deer. The restaurant area offers a genuine and tasty cuisine in a room of wooden logs. One can also spend the night in a bungalow or have a massage in a hut built in the trees .

    To do

The road to the South, in Mahébourg at the tip of the Morne. Stopping en route to the Souffleur hole (geyser marine), Souillac (for its marine cemetery), Bel Ombre (for its castle, a colonial house transformed into a gourmet restaurant that also serves tea in the afternoon).
From surfing or kite surfing (with a sail of parachute) at the Mistral club located between Le Morne and Bel Ombre. Strong sensations guaranteed !

    To think about

Instead choose a hotel in Bel Ombre, or along the Morne peninsula, the airport is not far ... and hotels in the Pointe d'Esny are the first to be sold out, even in low season (rooms reserved by the flight crew for a stop-over). Remember to plan your stay several months in advance if you want to spend your vacation around Mahébourg.
  • To avoid

The green coconut. They are everywhere (on the market, on stalls on the street), presented with a straw to drink the juice. The taste is bland, and unless you have brought a knife to carve out the pulp, you normally have to toss the fruit after three sips. Avoid also visiting the land of the seven colours in Chamarel as it is not beautiful: the colours of volcanic rocks may seem dull to you in comparison to visits at sunset.

    To try

Braised fish in a banana leaf. The cassava biscuits manufactured in Ville Noire, within 10 minutes by car from Mahébourg. The camarons (crayfish) in a garlic sauce. Some meat curries, fish or seafood, not too spicy (unless you request it to be so) and served with rice. Among the addresses to taste good cuisine, including these recipes, try the Bougainville at Blue Bay.

    To bring back

Jam made of exotic fruit, red sugar, spices, basketry, natural essences (ylang-ylang, vanilla, lemon grass, eucalyptus). The vanilla tea and cut flowers (best bought on the day of departure at the airport, they are sold in an adapted package allowing them to travel without wilting). Basketry objects, T-shirts and pareos which you can now find in in boutiques in the centre of Mahébourg.

Mauritius: you will wish you were here!

Mauritius: you will wish you were here!

Mauritius is without a doubt unbeatable for its hotels. Whatever your taste, there's something for everyone at all four corners of the island. The great thing is that not all hotels have succumbed to over-sized gyms and all the rest of the sporting activities one might be looking for in a hotel, but ...
