The West Coast of Mauritius, Mauritius

The west coast is diverse and most importantly and is the least rainy part of the island. Flic en Flac and Tamarin only see one day of rain from May to November, and no more than seven in February. The region is therefore to be chosen by those who do not want to spend a second out of the sun. Those who want to discover Port Louis and its surrounding areas will also like it here. Along the beach in Flic en Flac, a whole series of hotels follow one after the other. Be aware, however, that the beaches are very uneven in size depending on the hotel. The most luxurious hotels are located along the best beaches, and smaller hotels sometimes have to put up with a simple stretch of sand.

Sports lovers, however, will appreciate Tamarin, a known surfing spot and Black River, famous for its fishing, all in a largely preserved environment in the shadow of the 'Mountain du Rempart'.

Those who wish to leave the beaten path can take the local bus joining Quatre Bornes, and then descend to the south heading to Mahébourg. The trip is particularly cheap (about £1.50), but you need to have plenty of time to spend. This is because each bus only provides a link between two villages and it is therefore necessary to wait 10 to 20 minutes in each village while waiting for the connecting service.

pros

  •  The micro-climate .
  •  The proximity of several shopping centers (Port-Louis, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes ).

cons

  •  Beaches of uneven quality.

Visit The West Coast of Mauritius

  • To see

The gorges of the Black River. In the national park of the same name, its entrance is a couple of miles from the village of Great Black River. You can go canyoning, hiking along marked trails and swimming in pools of fresh water. Be aware of the monkeys, which can be very mischievous and steal a lot.

    To do

Big game fishing for those interested. Almost all of the hotels offer boat trips to see the tunas, sharks and marlins of the high seas. Alternatively, go on an excursion to the island of Bénitiers, on the south-west coast and its beautiful deserted beach (the island is not inhabited). To get there, ask at the hotels or the fishermen in the village of La Gaulette.

    To think about

Sheltered from the prevailing winds in the Indian Ocean, the west coast receives less rain annually than the east coast. Tamarin is the least watered region, so go there if you are planning to visit during cloudy months (July-August, December to February). For snorkeling there is no need to bring your own equipment, most hotels lend flippers, mask and snorkel.
  • To avoid

Do no bother seeing the salt mines of Tamarin, they are simply ponds of seawater arranged to collect salt. However, the centre of the village is traditional and deserves a look and the beach has a very attractive wild side. This is one of the places on the island suitable for surfing. Also avoid water sports (even though most hotels offer it) because it creates a noise that causes wildlife to flee the lagoon.

    To try

Deer coming from free range farms on the island. A tender meat to taste in the form of steak or curry (stew with spices) served with rice. The banana tart is also delicious and often offered in the dessert section of the hotel buffet. Try the samosas (fritters filled with meat or vegetables) and pineapple in hot pepper sold in the streets, or a dish of noodles sautéed with a Chinese taste, excellent and very cheap.

    To bring back

The well packaged vanilla tea and flowers (Amaryllis) travel easily by plane. Some spices, brown sugar and exotic fruit jam (banana, papaya and mango). Buy your souvenirs in Flic en Flac or Tamarin to avoid the journey to Port-Louis. If you plan to go to Port-Louis, visit the shops on the seafront of Caudan for less traditional purchases (clothing, leather goods).

Mauritius: you will wish you were here!

Mauritius: you will wish you were here!

Mauritius is without a doubt unbeatable for its hotels. Whatever your taste, there's something for everyone at all four corners of the island. The great thing is that not all hotels have succumbed to over-sized gyms and all the rest of the sporting activities one might be looking for in a hotel, but ...
