 Historical dates

9th century: the island was populated by the Bantus.
12th century: the first Persian immigration wave. Other migrations followed one another from the13th to the 15th century, which led to the island's conversion to Islam.
15th-18th century: considerable Madagascan migrations took place. Several conflicts happened with the local population.
1841: Sultan Adrian Souli sold Mayotte to France in exchange for an annual pension.
1912: Mayotte became a province of the colony of Madagascar.
1957: the island became an administrative overseas department.
1976: Mayotte gained the status of French 'Collectivité Territoriale'.
1997 (then in 2002): Younoussa Bamana was re-elected president of Conseil General - the local authorities.
January 2004: the act on secularity (prohibiting displaying religious signs in state schools) was implemented.
January 2007: Mayotte became a COM (Collectivité d'Outre-Mer), following the passing of the new act on overseas territory.
