Airports
Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi international airport is on Petite Terre, 3 miles from Dzaoudzi and 5 miles from Mamoudzou. If you want to go to Dzaoudzi, the only way is by taxi. The fare will cost you £1 week days and £1.50 on Sundays and bank holidays. If you want to got to Mamoudzou however, you will have to take a ferry to Grande Terre. The crossing costs £1 per person and £16 per vehicle.

Security
Thefts do not often happen but avoid keeping valuables on show, and do not leave your things unattended on the beach.

Languages
French is the official language. Shimaroe and Shibushi are also spoken.

Currency
The currency is the Euro, which consists of 100 Cents. There are ATM machines in Mamoudzou, Dzaoudzi, Labattoir and Pamandzi only, but some hotels and restaurants do accept credit cards (Visa and MasterCard). However, cheques in pounds issued by a British bank are rarely accepted. Bring travellers cheques in Euros and make sure you have enough cash on you. Banks are open during the week from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Local transportation
To get around at low cost, take the bush-taxis. You will pay £4 whatever the distance, but you will only set off when the taxi is full. If you are willing to rent a car, think about reserving in advance because there are few car rental companies and the amount of cars is limited. The quality of the roads is good, but it is recommended not to drive faster than 25 mph, even out in the bush, because obstacles can spring up at any time.

Health
No particular vaccine is required. However, be sure to be up to date with your current vaccinations, and have antimalaria treatment. Only drink sterilised or bottled water.
