Land-based wildlife As is the case with all of the islands, the skies over Mayotte boast very diverse wildlife. Having said that, some of the species found here are more original than others, such as the fruit bat, a large diurnal vampire. © Ariel Fuchs
Apart from the zebus and goats that you see constantly around the villages, Mayotte has wild pigs, civet cats, lemurs, flying foxes (diurnal bats) and many birds such as herons, egrets, tropicbirds, kingfishers and hummingbirds. You are more likely to see wading birds (herons, egrets and plovers) among the extremely dense vegetation of the island.
