Coba, once a very powerful Mayan city from the 6th to the 10th century, is not so easily accessible and is therefore less busy. On this wild and mysterious site, surrounded by a rustling jungle, only a few buildings were cut free from the forest: the Conjunto de las Pinturas (the temple of Paintings), with its few carved tombstones and traces of polychrome frescoes, and the impressive Nohoch Mul pyramid, the highest in Yucatan (42 m), the summit of which overlooks the jungle.
