You can see them all over the peninsula: in the jungle, outside your hotel and on the archaeological sites. It is said that they become less aggressive once used to human presence, as long as you do not touch them, and that they can live up to 25 years. Iguanas abound on the sites of Tulum (in the south) and of El Rey (in the north). In Cancun, no less than 1,500 specimens are gathered in the gardens and on the stones of the Mayan temple El Rey. They sometimes get into groups of a few dozen and let you get as close as a yard or two from them.
