Overview

Mexico Yucatan

The state of Yucatan has in itself all that Mexico needs to appeal to its tourists. First of all, fine sandy beaches which are a delight to tourists from the US and from all over the world. Thus, a string of forever growing sea resorts, such as Cancun, line the crystal clear water shoreline. Concerning the environment, the mostly limestone peninsula displays one local attraction that you should not miss: the cenotes - these natural gaps in the ground creating water trails within the rock. On Mayan territory, the archaeological sites justify exploring Yucatan through and through and discovering its extraordinarily abundant heritage.

pros

  •  Yucatan boasts the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
  •  Scuba diving on the southeast coast of Yucatan.
  •  The consistant climate and water temperature.
  •  The great diversity of accommodation.
  •  Three exceptional Mayan sites: Tulum, Uxmal and Chichen Itza.

cons

  •  The americanisation of some of the resorts, especially Cancun's, leads to the prices constantly increasing.
  •  The proliferation of ?mushroom' resorts such as Cancun and Tulum.
  •  The journeys are often long and monotonous.

Our Editorial team's advice

The best time to visit Yucatan is between November and the end of May. Between mid-December and the beginning of January, the prices are very high and the hotels are crowded because it is the Americans' winter holiday.
The sea is also turquoise at this time and the possibilities for scuba diving are better. Our favourite beach is Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean side.
