Founded in 1541, Morelia is the wealthy capital city of the state of Michoacán. A UNESCO world heritage site, it is the quintessential 12th-18th century colonial city. The cantera rosa or basalt stone, gives ochre and pink shades to its countless churches and private mansions. They can be seen on the university grounds and governmental palaces such as Palacio Clavijero, the 1660 old Jesuit school.
