Taxco

Hanging off the steep foothills of Sierra Madre, Taxco was founded in 1534, thanks to the discovery of a fabulous site of silver ore. With its white-washed walls, cobbled streets climbing up to the top of the mountain, curved tile roofs and wrought iron balconies, it cultivates an air of Old Spain. Overlooking Zócalo, the stylish Santa Prisca's church is a master-piece of churrigueresque art, this paroxysmal baroque style. All around the square, there are some venerable colonial houses with restaurant terraces or goldsmith's workshops, nestled in pleasant interior patios.
