The Chiapas mountains were the cradle of one of the most fascinating and enigmatic civilizations: the Mayas. The archaeological town of Palenque bears witness to it, nestled in the mountains of Sierra Madre, 5 miles away from Santo Domingo. As far as the town of Tonina is concerned, it is characterized by an immense artificial mountain, built on a clay ridge. The whole region is covered by 7 platforms onto which the Mayas built temples and palaces. They make up a roughly 230 feet high monumental maze. Let us mention Yaxchilan, a town lost in the jungle, located on the left bank of the Usumacinta. It is situated a little over 33 feet higher than average ground level, in the centre of Lacandona forest.
