Nicknamed the ?dead jungle' because of the relatively low height of the trees, the Mexican jungle (?selva') stretches over the peninsula to south of Cancun. Although the trees don't reach the 65 ft height displayed by Amazonian or Brazilian forests, the vegetation is still very dense. This forest stands in the hinterlands and shelters varied vegetation and wildlife. Day-trips are available to explore either the famous ?cenotes' (underground rivers), or meet the Indians of Mayan descent, or even the archaeological sites.
