In the state of Michoacan, west of Mexico City, lies the Monarca butterfly reserve in the heart of a more than one million acre forest region covered with pine and oak trees and local conifers called Oyamels. It was declared a wildlife reserve in 1980 and, later on, registered as special reserve of the biosphere. Six years later, these forests were declared "nature zone, protected for the migration, hibernation and reproduction of the Monarca butterfly". The winter migration and reproduction of the Monarca butterflies take place in the villages of Agangueo and Ocampo. The time to watch this phenomenon goes from November to March.
