Yucatan is lined by mangroves and delightful white sandy beaches caressed by the turquoise sea. The Sian Ka'an National Park, on the border with Belize, which conceals the most beautiful coral reefs of the Caribbean, is an absolute gem. However, sea resorts have recently sprouted all along the coast from Cancun to Tulum. Those who may be afraid of the American standardisation of the coast will just need to seek refuge on the small island off Cancun, Isla Mujeres. The beaches lined with arecas and surrounded by coral reefs (particularly playa Rancheros, a natural reserve for turtles, and playa El Garrafel, the under-water national park), the tropical forest covering the centre of the island and sheltering Mayan temple ruins, give the island its discreet, natural and unspoilt charm. Another destination is Playa del Carmen, located 42 miles from Cancun, where the small hotels and their bungalows attract a mostly European clientele. Despite its soaring development, Playa del Carmen remains one of the most attractive beaches in Yucatan. However, Laguna de Xel-ha has fallen victim of its own success. A truly natural pool with coral reefs and schools of fish, this lagoon now looks like a paddling pool.
