Sian Ka'an National Park is in fact a biosphere. It is Mexico's largest ecological reserve, an ecological park consisting of 1,297,300 acres of forests, lagoons, swamps, coral reefs and Mayan ruins. Several sand islets are the place for thousands of birds to nest. Over 350 species live there such as the egrets, kingfishers, frigate birds and blue herons. Pumas, ocelots, monkeys and crocodiles make their home here. The underwater wildlife is rich in tropical fish and sea turtles.
